After growing tomatoes in pots successfully earlier in the year, I wanted to try growing my favorite vegetable — beets.  Bought two varieties of seeds — Early Wonder (traditional dark red with huge leaves) by Botanical Interests purchased at my neighborhood Armstrong Nursery and Golden Beets by Renee’s Gardens purchased at Cedros Gardens.

Estimated time to maturity is 55-60 days, so, in order to have beets in time for Thanksgiving, I planted the seeds at the end of September.  Kept my fingers crossed and hoped for the best.  Didn’t have to wait long.  Saw signs of germination for the Early Wonder seeds after just 5 days.  Goldens started to pop up in 6 days.

By Oct. 19 I felt like the plants weren’t getting enough sun since my backyard sits between a slope to the east and my house to the west, so I put the pot on a retaining wall and tilted it slightly towards the south.  My husband, Gil, calls this “fix” a really low-tech solar power solution.  On Oct. 25 I fed the plants with leftover tomato food.

By Nov. 5 the largest leaves on the Early Wonders are 5-6 inches long and, at last, the Goldens appear to be doing better.  It’s difficult to water them now without dousing the leaves and making them lie down temporarily.  Something or someone has started nibbling the Early Wonder leaves, but I don’t see insects or varmints in the pot.  Will have to work on that issue since I’m looking forward to eating the leaves myself.
